Dr Neil Newman has had a practice in clinical psychology in the Union Square neighborhood, specializing in psychotherapy, since 1988.  Dr Newman draws upon a variety of therapeutic approaches to alleviate psychological difficulties, with a commitment to resolve these problems as quickly as possible.  While having experience with most psychological and psychiatric disorders, Dr Newman works primarily with the different forms of anxiety and depression, relationship and family discord, challenges of work and career, and the full range of childhood psychological difficulties. Psychological Testing and training clinical and school psychologists are the secondary elements of his practice.

Prior to his doctoral training in clinical psychology, Dr Newman was a nursery school and elementary school teacher.  After his training in a variety of New York City hospitals, Dr Newman was on staff in clinical psychology internships and psychiatry departments, and taught psychotherapy and psychological assessment in a clinical psychology doctoral program. Dr Newman continues to spend a considerable portion of his time training graduate students and early career psychologists.

Along with experience in a variety of modalities, Dr Newman has had advanced, postdoctoral training in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, and is on the adjunct faculty of two doctoral programs in clinical psychology and two psychology internships. Psychological Testing is available and conducted by other psychologists in the practice, supervised by Dr Newman.

A significant portion of Dr Newman’s practice involves working with parents. Tailored to each family’s circumstance, this may include seeing parents as a couple or individually. His work in recent years has extended to counseling parents of adult children.

Dr Newman’s approach to psychotherapy is fundamentally psychodynamic but often includes elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and behavior modification. These approaches notwithstanding, some challenges are best helped with straight forward practical solutions.
